Glyph

Overview

The Glyph is a modular leverless platform built around swappable layouts, magnetic panels, and bundle-based customization.

Its pitch is flexibility: buyers can change button arrangements, artwork, and accessory packages without treating the controller as a fixed single-layout product.

Hardware

Physical Characteristics

The Glyph is described as a slim controller with dimensions varying by layout configuration.

Materials

Layout Panels: Durable, shatter-resistant polycarbonate with scratch-resistant coating. Panels attach magnetically for quick layout changes.

Art Sheets: Water-resistant polyester material for custom artwork.

Rear Shell: Aluminum construction providing structural rigidity. Available finishes depend on bundle tier:

  • Powder-coated Arctic White (Base and select bundles)
  • Anodized gold shell (higher-tier bundles)

Hardware: Threaded metal inserts and Torx-head screws.

Switch Configuration

Stock Switches: Gateron G Pro 3.0 Silver linear switches

Switch Compatibility: The Glyph supports any MX-compatible mechanical switches. Users can swap switches using the included key puller tool.

Layout System

The Glyph features a modular layout system using magnetic panels that allow complete button layout changes in minutes.

Available Layouts:

  • Full layout
  • Platform fighter layout
  • FGC layout
  • Split FGC layout
  • Custom user-defined layouts

Layout changes involve removing the magnetic panel, hotswapping relevant switches as needed, and inserting a new panel.

Electronics

  • PCB / Controller: Modular controller platform with platform-fighter oriented internal electronics
  • Firmware / Software: HayBox fork with a web-based remapping tool built by Greg Turbo
  • Special features: Layout-panel modularity and software remapping

Expansion Features

Dual Expansion Bays: Built-in expansion ports for future community-developed accessories and modifications.

RGB Lighting: Adjustable RGB lighting with customizable color, animation, and brightness settings.

Art Customization: Swappable art sheets and keycaps supported.

Compatibility

  • Firmware: Fork of HayBox
  • Native support: PC, Nintendo Switch, GameCube, Wii
  • Connection: Wired USB-C, with USB-A and USB-C to GameCube cables included in the base bundle

History

Kickstarter Campaign

The Glyph Kickstarter campaign launched in September 2023 under the title “Glyph: The Ultimate Moddable Game Controller for PC/Console.” The campaign aimed to fund the development and production of a highly modular, open-source controller platform designed for traditional and platform fighters.

Campaign Results:

  • Goal: $75,000 USD
  • Raised: $134,404 USD
  • Backers: 381
  • Status: Successfully funded (September 2023)
  • Estimated delivery: April 2024

Design Origins

The Glyph was inspired by the “C53,” an all-button controller prototype built by Matt Crane, founder of Crane’s Lab and Creative Lead for the project. The goal was to create a mainstream-accessible modular controller that could adapt to multiple fighting game genres.

Development Timeline:

September 2023: Kickstarter campaign launched. Initial prototypes used first-run aluminum rear shell samples with 3D-printed and vacuum-formed components for testing.

Pre-tooling Phase (October 2023): Final pre-tooling hardware prototypes planned for early October. High-level design was complete with only small tweaks remaining before mass production tooling. Electronic design and software development proceeded in parallel with bug cleanup ongoing before FCC certification.

Post-Campaign (2024-2025): Extended development period to refine manufacturing processes and address production challenges.

  • Backers: 381
  • Estimated delivery: April 2024

Development Phase (2023-2024):

  • Prototype refinement
  • Pre-tooling hardware finalization
  • FCC certification preparation

Production Phase (2024-2025):

  • Manufacturing tooling completion
  • Component production
  • Quality control and verification
  • An OLED display was added to the controller during this phase of development, with the interface/firmware written by Greg Turbo.

Current Status (January 2025):

  • Pre-orders remain open
  • Production ongoing with updated timeline
  • Aluminum shell production nearing completion
  • Final assembly and shipping preparation phase
